Health care is a human right. But our system of insurance is completely broken - thousands cannot access the care they need, or go bankrupt trying to do so, while health care workers bear the brunt. The only true solution is to streamline the process and pool our collective bargaining power against insurance companies and hospital systems to create a single payer system. A payroll-tax financed health system will also help organizations, small businesses and local governments balance their budgets, when runaway health care costs have pushed their finances to the breaking point. Let's make Massachusetts a leader again in health care access, and help write the next chapter for health care for our country!

This is a moral issue. Everyone has the right to health care. Right now, Massachusetts spends over $128 billion annually on health care, and over 42% of that spending goes to insurance company administrative waste, monopolistic drug pricing, and burdensome billing that does nothing to make anyone healthier. A single payer system will save the Commonwealth approximately $30 billion in the first year alone, while expanding coverage to the uninsured, removing barriers to access, and ensuring over 98% of Massachusetts households spend less on health care than they do now. With the Trump administration gutting Medicaid, CHIP, and the ACA, Massachusetts must be prepared to step up and protect our residents.

The only way to make health care more affordable is to end the primacy of profit-driven insurance corporations in the health care system. Health care should be about the people who need care and the medical professionals who provide the care, not about the billion-dollar corporations trying to make money from it. The best answer is to enact Medicare for All, which would establish a single payer system in which all residents would have health care as a right. We have a model that works - Medicare works for seniors. If we have a model that works, we should use that model to make sure that all residents get good, affordable health care.

Health care is personal to me, it's not just policy. As a mental health clinician, I have sat with individuals and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and witnessed how cost, insurance barriers, and delayed care can make already hard situations even harder. I know what it feels like to balance family responsibilities, work, and health while navigating systems that do not always put people first. No one should have to choose between paying rent, buying groceries, caring for their children, or getting medical treatment. I believe health care is a human right and not a privilege tied to employment, income, gender, or zip code. Massachusetts should continue leading by building a system that prioritizes people over profits and ensures everyone can access quality physical, mental, reproductive, and preventive care with dignity.

Health care is a right, not a privilege. No family should be forced to choose between paying for medical care and paying their bills, and no one should face financial hardship because they become sick. Medicare for All, first, would expand access to health care by ensuring that every resident in Massachusetts has coverage regardless of income, employment, or pre-existing conditions. Second, it would simplify a complex health care system that currently burdens patients, providers, and businesses with excessive administrative costs. Third, it would help control health care spending by leveraging the purchasing power of a large public system to negotiate lower costs for services and prescription medications. I also recognize that transitioning to Medicare for All could impact many hardworking people currently employed in the private health insurance industry. Any responsible Medicare for All proposal must include a comprehensive plan for displaced workers, including retraining opportunities, wage assistance, job placement services, and pathways into growing healthcare and public service professions. Health care reform should be guided by fairness, compassion, and practical solutions. Medicare for All, coupled with strong protections for affected workers, offers an opportunity to create an equal ground health system and more secure future for everyone.
