Massachusetts Single Payer Legislative Co-Sponsors

Mass Care is supporting two single payer bills that were filed in January 2013.

The first, S.515/H. 1035, An Act To Provide Medicare for All In Massachusetts, is the updated version of the bill that has been filed each session since 1995. The bill defines its funding mechanism, benefits, etc. The lead sponsors of the bill are Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Jason Lewis.

The second, S.572/H.1053, An Act to Insure Effective Health Care Cost Control, made its debut last session as the “Eldridge Amendment” to the Health Care Financing Bill. It came within four votes of winning in the senate, which is why we are so hopeful this year. It requires that we do cost comparisons over the next three years with what we actually have spent on health care in MA and what we would have spent under single payer. If single payer is more cost effective, the state would be responsible for developing a single payer implementation plan. The lead sponsors of this bill are Senator Dan Wolf and Representative Tom Sannicandro.
