Dear Advocate,

Yesterday afternoon the Legislature meeting in Constitutional Convention voted 118 to 76 (see the roll call) to send the Health Care Amendment to a special committee for study. The motion was sponsored by Senator Richard Moore (D-Uxbridge) who co-chairs the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing.

We are extremely disappointed that an amendment that had overwhelming popular and legislative support and only needed 50 Yes votes to be placed on the ballot this November was put into a study. We are confident that if we get a timely report, after a prompt study of the Amendment on its merits, the special committee will present its findings to members of the convention when it reconvenes on November 9, 2006.

We expect the Amendment will finally receive its second and final vote. If it receives the 50 Yes votes it needs it would be placed on the November 2008 ballot.

The Health Care Amendment Campaign continues on. There is still more work to do and we look forward to your continuing support.
